Fleeting Familiarity
Performing as Abigail Williams in the Crucible, the last performance before your high school graduation.
The moment you realize you’re falling in love. After seeing the light in her eyes when you remembered
her exact order, you know you would do anything to see it again. Saying goodbye to a sibling or friend
before they move to college, even if they come back you know the familiarity of their presence won’t be
the same. Drinking your last cup of coffee before that café you spent so many hours in closes down.
Listening to “All the Lonely Nights in Your Life” for the first time. All the emotions twisting, turning inside
of you that words alone just can’t convey. The little moments where you are able to feel the pain of
saying goodbye to what has been and the exhilaration of being able to open a new door.
Sentimentality. While reflecting on time that has passed and daydreaming about the endless
possibilities of what has yet to come can take an emotional toll on any heart, the soul cannot feel truly
submerged into raw emotions of nostalgia and longing until a person recognizes the feeling of sentiment
before that moment slips into the past.
Sentimentality in the now is the extraordinary clash between both the past and the future. Where you
are able to feel all of it at once. The true tragedy, however, is that these moments only last for an
instant before they are gone. Less time than the blink of an eye when it comes to the vast timeline of
our universe. This feeling of tenderness in fleeting moments was the inspiration for the photoset
showcased above.
